- Questions?
Famous ERP is a true client/server application. Network features such as servers, cabling, switches, topology, and clients all affect overall system performance. Famous is designed to be run in an Active Directory domain environment. Networks configured for simple "file and printer sharing" are frequently inadequate as true client/server platforms. A qualified network engineer should configure your network for you to reap the full benefits of Famous software.
The following recommendations assume that the Famous database is installed on a dedicated server running no other applications. You may require greater capacities and/or hardware speeds depending on your transaction volume.
Important Notes
- Only the operating systems explicitly listed below are supported. Unsupported operating systems include but are not limited to Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 R1, and any version of Windows Small Business Server.
- Microsoft Hyper-V is supported. Please contact Famous Network Services regarding other virtualization products.
- The Famous ERP server can be run on a local virtual server or can be hosted in the cloud. For this setup, the virtual machine only needs a CPU with half the recommended number of cores of a physical server (see server requirements below). Additionally, it is recommended that you use an RDS server or VDI setup as well.
- Microsoft support for Windows Server 2012 R2 ends October 10, 2023.
- A site-to-site VPN connection between the Famous ERP client and server is not recommended. For more on this, see Famous ERP Remote Connection Recommendations.
Minimum Server Requirements
Operating System
- Famous ERP 2022 or Newer Version (Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, or 2022)
- Famous ERP 2021 (Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012, or 2012 R2, Standard Edition)
Additional Specifications
- Installed as a member server in an Active Directory domain.
- Tape or removable disk backup system with supporting software is highly recommended.
- VPN or Modem Connection
Hardware
Users | Requirements |
26-50 | • Dual hex-core Intel® Xeon® processors, 3 GHz |
11 to 25 | • Dual quad-core Intel® Xeon® processors, 2.5 GHz • 16 GB RAM |
10 or Fewer | • Single hex-core Intel® Xeon® processor, 2.5 GHz • 16 GB RAM |
For 50+ users, please contact Famous Network Services.
Disk Drives
Famous recommends utilizing SAS drives (Serial attached SCSI). Although SATA drives are adequate, the reliability and performance of SAS drives is preferred. The minimum disk space required for the Famous database is dependent upon numerous factors - volume of transactions, number of companies, etc. Our recommendation for most new installations is as follows:
- 60 GB C:\ drive for the operating system.
- 100 + GB D:\ drive for the Famous database.
Example Drive Configurations
- 2 x 300 GB SAS drives in RAID 1
- 3 x 300 GB SAS drives in RAID 5
- 4 x 300 GB SAS drives in RAID 10
Of these three configurations, RAID 10 offers the best performance. Also, you may wish to consider adding an additional drive to the array configured as a hot spare.
Installation of Oracle Updates
Famous ERP relies on the integrity and security of the Oracle database. We are a member of the Oracle Partner community and are registered Oracle licensees. Once tested and approved, Oracle updates are automatically included in the releases you receive from us.
Remote Access
Famous Support requires a native TCP/IP connection to the Famous database server to diagnose and resolve database related issues. Famous Network Services will provide a Hamachi hub-and-spoke VPN between your server and our staff to fulfill this requirement. This is the preferred method for providing remote access. Alternatively, Microsoft provides the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) that allows the Famous database server to accept incoming connections. If you choose to use RRAS instead of Hamachi, we recommend configuring it to accept PPTP connections.
If you have an existing VPN, we support any VPN that is connectable via the Windows client. We also support in-browser or "light" SSL VPN clients. Unfortunately, we are not able to support the use of third party L2TP/IPSEC clients (such as the SonicWALL Global VPN client) as they are not interoperable. Presentation applications such as PCAnywhere®, Terminal Services® (Remote Desktop), Citrix®, or VNC® are not sufficient and do not satisfy the remote access requirement.
Famous Support requires a dedicated Windows user account. If you have a domain environment, we request the account be a domain account. The account must be a member of the Administrators group on the Famous database server.
Please contact Famous Support with any questions regarding remote access.
Client Workstations
- Windows 8.1/10/11 (64-bit)
- Intel Processor® (2 GHz or greater)
- LAN connection (100 Mb/s or greater at <10 ms latency)
- 2 GB RAM (please follow operating system requirements)
- Windows 8.1 is the minimum required version.
- If email functionality is desired, a 32-bit simple MAPI compliant email client must be installed.
Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services) and Citrix are also supported. Please contact Famous Network Services for additional considerations. Remote Desktop Services Easy Print is not supported.
Remote Users
The Famous Client must be run on the same LAN as the Famous Database server. If you have remote users or locations (warehouses, sheds, etc.) we recommend using Remote Desktop Services or Citrix to provide the Famous Client to those users. To ensure application performance and security, Remote Desktop Services/Citrix should be run on a separate server from Famous ERP. Please contact Famous Network Services for additional considerations.
Remote Desktop Services/Citrix servers running Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016, and Windows Server 2019 are supported.
The Famous ERP 2023 client (or newer version) is not supported on Windows Server 2008R2.
Tablets
Tablets that run a Professional edition of Windows and meet workstation hardware requirements are supported as workstations. Low-power tablets (iPad, Android devices, Microsoft Surface RT, etc.) cannot run the Famous Client natively but are supported when used in a Remote Desktop Services or Citrix environment.
Special inputs such as touch or handwriting using a stylus may not interact as desired with Famous and are not supported. Please contact Famous Support if you have a specific business requirement for special input.
Printing
Printing is an important function. The variety of printer models grows daily. Not all printers or features are supported. Please contact Famous Software prior to purchasing any printer not specified below.
Laser: Famous recommends HP LaserJet printers.
Tag Printers: Zebra ZT411 or Honeywell PM45A. Please consult us about others.
Impact Printers: A continuous form impact printer (dot matrix) is required to print preprinted continuous form documents. Unfortunately, recent Okidata models are not performing to prior standards. We recommend that you avoid continuous documents until we can determine the best replacement option.
Unsupported Printers: We do not support inkjet printers, multifunction (copy/scan/fax) laser printers, or the use of large copy machines.
Pallet and Bin Tag Printing
Famous ERP typically uses thermal transfer printers for inventory and RFID tags. Custom tag formats are available from Famous Custom Development Services. Compatible thermal transfer printers include many made by Zebra and Honeywell. Contact us to confirm compatibility prior to purchasing tag printers.
Document Printing
Famous ERP prints on blank paper, stationery, preprinted laser forms, and preprinted continuous forms. Blank paper, stationery, and preprinted laser forms require a laser printer and can print multiple copies automatically. Preprinted continuous forms require an impact printer (dot matrix). The following table identifies document printing options and printer requirements. Contact us if you have questions.

Custom Forms
Famous Software can supply you with both standard and custom forms. Standard forms are not preprinted with your company's information. Your computer adds it while printing. Multi-part, continuous forms require an impact printer. All forms conform to Famous Software print formats. Ask your Famous Sales Representative for details or visit www.FamousSoftware.com.
